This is the season to be grateful!
As we approach the festivities of Christmas, what better way to celebrate than by fostering an attitude of gratitude?
What is Gratitude?
Gratitude refers to the simple act of recognising and appreciating the good things in our lives. And guess what? The benefits of gratitude are endless!
Previous research has shown that practicing gratitude not only makes us happier and strengthens our relationships but has also been proven to reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. Researchers have also found that young people with high levels of gratitude tend to evaluate themselves more positively and have greater satisfaction with their school experience.
Gratitude may seem like just a simple gesture or act of thankfulness. However, this simple practice goes a long way in affecting our overall biological functioning. When we express gratitude, our brains release happy chemicals known as dopamine and serotonin, immediately enhancing our mood. Additionally, practicing gratitude has been found to reduce the levels of cortisol, also known as the stress hormone, in our bodies. By acknowledging and appreciating the little things in life, we can rewire our brains to pay attention to the good.
How can my young person practise gratitude this Christmas?
Gratitude Journaling
Gratitude journaling is about taking a moment to appreciate the good things in our lives. It’s about writing down the things we are grateful for, the things that make us proud, and the awesome stuff happening around us. By jotting down the things we’re grateful for, even on our worst days, we can start to see the positives shining through.
There is power in the words we use. The entries don’t have to be major events – they might be things that seem simple, like talking to a friend, enjoying a good meal, or sleeping in a warm bed.

Creating a Gratitude Jar
Creating a gratitude jar is a fun and tangible way for young people to practice gratitude. All you need is a jar and some colourful paper or notecards. Encourage your young person to write down something they’re thankful for each day and place it in the jar. As the jar fills up, it becomes a visual representation of the abundance of positive moments in their lives.
